Rated voltage, current and short-circuit withstand capability are usually the first considerations when selecting switchgear. They are essential to making the right choice. For equipment expected to remain in service for many years, maintenance requirements, insulation technology and regulations in the intended market are equally important.
This is why SF₆-free switchgear is attracting attention: electrical infrastructure investments must meet today’s needs while remaining suitable for future operating conditions.
Why is SF₆ under scrutiny?
SF₆ is a gas used for electrical insulation and, in some equipment designs, current interruption. Its climate impact has led to changes in the regulations governing its use.
In the European Union, subject to exemptions and transitional provisions, restrictions on putting medium-voltage switchgear into operation when it uses fluorinated greenhouse gases for insulation or interruption began on 1 January 2026 for applications up to and including 24 kV. For applications above 24 kV and up to and including 52 kV, the corresponding date is 1 January 2030.

Insulation and current interruption serve different purposes
A vacuum circuit breaker does not necessarily make the entire switchgear assembly SF₆-free. Vacuum may provide the interruption function inside the breaker, while other parts of the assembly use a different insulating medium.
SF₆-free designs can use air, solid insulation or a combination of both. A proper technical assessment must therefore cover the complete assembly, rather than focusing solely on the circuit breaker. “SF₆-free” and “free of fluorinated greenhouse gases” also have different meanings. Where an alternative gas is used, its composition must be clearly identified.
What should buyers ask?
When evaluating a switchgear solution, the following questions should be considered together:
– Which media are used for insulation and current interruption?
– Are the voltage, current and short-circuit ratings suitable for the project?
– Which model and configuration are covered by the type tests?
– Under what conditions is internal arc performance specified?
– How will maintenance, spare parts and end-of-life handling be managed?
An SF₆-free design does not, by itself, demonstrate compliance with every technical requirement. Likewise, the general advantages of a technology do not guarantee identical performance across all products.
A sound investment decision brings technical performance, operating conditions and environmental requirements together. This helps prevent decisions made at procurement from becoming sources of uncertainty later in the equipment’s service life.
