Transformers enable electrical energy to be transferred at appropriate voltage levels in alternating current systems. Oil-immersed and dry-type designs, including cast resin options, are evaluated for power and distribution applications according to the facility’s connection conditions.
Rated power, voltage ratio, vector group, short-circuit impedance, loss targets and cooling method are determined according to the project requirements. In renewable energy and power electronics applications, the load profile, harmonics and operating cycle are considered among the design inputs.
Monitoring and protection equipment is selected according to the transformer type. For oil-immersed transformers, temperature and oil-level monitoring and suitable pressure or gas protection arrangements may be considered. For dry-type transformers, solutions such as winding temperature monitoring may be evaluated. The tap-changing method is selected depending on whether de-energised or on-load operation is required. Altitude, ambient temperature and installation conditions are also considered during product selection.
